Each year at Kenny Waste Management, we choose one or two local charities to support. This year we’re getting behind two fantastic Manchester-based organisations: The Christie charity and Tackle4MCR.
Sadly, all of us come into contact with cancer at some point in our lives, whether it’s ourselves or a friend or loved one. The team at Kenny Waste Management chose to support local cancer charity The Christie charity, as some of us currently have family affected by the disease.
The Christie charity is based at The Christie hospital on Wilmslow Road, an NHS hospital that specialises in cancer research and care. The charity was set up to provide additional services to cancer patients and their families over and above what the NHS can provide. They’ve opened a dedicated Teenage and Young Adult Unit, and provide support for everything from information services to wigs.
The Christie charity does exceptional work to care for people with cancer and their loved ones, and we’re glad to be able to help them in any way we can. The second charity we chose, Tackle4MCR, is also close to our heart, and ties in with Kenny Waste Management’s Driving Change social enterprise programme. Helping people to turn their lives around is a big part of what we do with our Driving Change work; however, so far, our main emphasis has been on supporting individuals into employment.
We now hope to take this a step further, and help someone into a home as well as a job. We are launching our “Change 20 Lives by 2020” programme, which aims to turn life around for 20 local people. This programme ties in perfectly with initiatives run by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, and the Manchester charity he’s involved with, Tackle4MCR.
Tackle4MCR is a joint initiative between Andy Burnham and Manchester City’s captain Vincent Kompany. The project was set up to address the region’s rough sleeping and homelessness. It aims to raise both money and awareness, working in partnership with local organisations.
We’ve started talks with the Mayor’s office about supporting a homeless person. We would provide him or her with accommodation, employment at Kenny Waste Management, and training as an HGV driver. We’ll keep you updated on our progress with this commitment. In the meantime, we’re delighted to support Tackle4MCR as an excellent local charity.
